144 SCALA NATURAE

Scala Naturae reflects on various contemporary issues and speculates on the end of anthropocentrism. Although the concept of scala naturae was structured based on the human being placed at the top, we propose a new situation: to include in this scale artificial entities with which we interact on a daily basis, without necessarily understanding their processes, their logics and resolutions. These entities, the machines, despite being created by man, it is evident that every day they need us less, since they do not even understand the world in the same way; their perception and capabilities are radically different from ours.

We propose the chapel as the very structure or framework of a great machine whose internal processes that are usually far from our perception and therefore our understanding, are here exposed, magnified and become the very aesthetic engine of the work.

This machine acts in a self-sufficient way, preparing texts, encoding them, printing them back and ultimately, following a digital and mechanical process for which it does not need us at all. However, the very act of actively observing will make the installation impregnated with our presence, and in the same way that a moth or speck of dust, people will be able to alter the system, causing the final impression to contain in its error, the memory of our presence.

Winning project of the IV Barjola award.
